I WENT FROM SLEEPING BEAUTY TO THE FUCKING HUNGER GAMES BEFORE MY FIRST CUP OF COFFEE. 💀☕🏹
Yesterday I finished my shift at 9 PM.
Got home.
Crashed into bed like a Victorian woman dying of exhaustion.
Set my alarm for 7 AM.
Or so I fucking thought.
This morning I’m peacefully yawning along to my alarm like I’m starring in a Disney movie.
Pick up my phone.
8:00.
EIGHT. FUCKING. O’CLOCK.
I START AT EIGHT. 💀
BABE.
I’ve never gone from unconscious to DEFCON 1 so fast.
Called the ward.
”I’M COMING! I LIVE TEN MINUTES AWAY!”
No coffee. No makeup. No time to question my life choices.
JUST GO GO GO.
And because apparently being late wasn’t enough guilt for one morning, I volunteered to skip my break.
AND take half the ward myself so my two colleagues could manage the other half.
Because apparently my apology language is SELF-SACRIFICE. 😂
MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN MY FAVOR. 🏹
So there I was.
ME. MYSELF. AND I.
Eight residents.
Medication routines handled.
Meals served. Kitchen chef and staff did the cooking. I ran the dining room. 😂
Everyone fed.
Nobody hungry.
ZERO complaints.
NOT EVEN ABOUT THE FOOD.
WHICH IN ELDERLY CARE IS BASICALLY A FIVE-STAR MICHELIN REVIEW. 💀
And then I stayed for another shift.
Because apparently I enjoy living dangerously.
But here’s the thing.
I’m proud I showed up.
I’m proud I handled the chaos.
But skipping breaks and running on exhaustion shouldn’t be a badge of honor.
Healthcare workers are human beings.
Even the ones who occasionally sleep through their fucking alarms.
And maybe THAT’S the real plot twist.
I WAS LATE TO WORK.
NOT LATE TO CARE. ❤️
